Here is a recap of the legend of St. George, the Dragon Slayer.  There was a dragon by the name of Selena that roamed near Libya.  To appease Selena, local residents would give it two sheep each day to satisfy its hunger.  When Selena was no longer satisfied, the inhabitants decided a human would have to be sacrificed and lots were drawn to determine who would be fated as sacrificial food for Selena.   As destiny had it, the king’s daughter drew the lot and the maiden was led to the marsh near the dragon to await her fate.

St. George, a very brave Knight, waited near the marsh for Selena. When Selena appeared, he made his move.  St. George blessed himself , and then he bravely attacked and transfixed Selena with his lance.  He bound the neck of Selena with the maiden’s girdle.  Thus with Selena restrained, the princess was saved. The grateful King wanted to give St. George half of his Kingdom; however the knight turned down the offer and instead asked the King to honor God’s churches, and the poor.  Hence the noble knight also became known as Saint George the dragon slayer.   Today, in certain parts of the world you will find statues of St. George and the dragon commemorating his act of bravery.

Apart from all the legends, dragons are also depicted in the ancient artwork found in Asian pottery, Egyptian burial shrouds and various ceremonial art throughout the world, collectively it all leads to a solid hypothesis of their existence.
